My 3 Words for 2023

My 3 Words – 2023 Edition

If I were a bumper-sticker kinda guy, the back of my Subaru would show: Believe, Share, Discover. I chose those as My 3 Words for 2023. I choose new words every January. They help me focus on what I know is important for my growth.

Three Reasons for 3 Words

First, the exercise helps me set a direction for the year.

Second, reduced to simple words of action, My 3 Words has a powerfully simple focus.

Third, I can tap into my network for accountability by sharing My 3 Words. And I’ll share them again in a few months to keep myself on track.

My 3 Words for 2023:

Believe

This might be the most difficult word for me, and the most important. I don’t always believe in myself, my knowledge, or my value. I will, in 2023, focus on belief in my work.

Share

“Believe” has an internal focus, and “share” brings the outward expression I need. I will share more of my time and my experience with those who can benefit. I learned this one in kindergarten, and I’m glad to bring it back to the front.

Discover

It’s easy to listen to the same musical artists, read the same authors, and eat the same food, but it’s not healthy. I’m going to expand all my sensory experiences in 2023. There is a whole world to discover.

Tips for Choosing Your 3:

“Choose any three words you feel will guide you forward,” advises Chris Brogan, the author and speaker who shared this with me years ago. Brogan says to think of your 3 Words as “lighthouses” that can direct you daily. You can see Brogan’s story and his words here.

  • Choose simple action words. Don’t make it a phrase.

  • The more utilitarian the word can be, the better.

  • Stick with the 3 words all year.

  • Keep them visible and review them often.

  • If they matter to you, they matter.

  • Don’t worry about explaining them to others.

This is my fourth year of selecting My 3 Words, and I continue to benefit from the process. I will admit that I was a bit tardy with my 2022 selection, but I got it done and gained from it. Here are my annual picks

2022: Specify. Reach. Cut.

2021: Think. Break. Go.

2020: Create. Ask. And.
